The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) offers a number of postgraduate programmes, including research postgraduate (RPg) (namely Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programmes), professional doctorate (namely Doctor of Education (EdD) programme), and a variety of taught postgraduate (TPg) programmes.
Research postgraduate, professional doctorate, and taught programmes
Students enrolled in PhD and MPhil programmes benefit from the combined expertise of a team of renowned mentors and rigorous training in research skills and methods. MPhil and PhD candidates are expected to publish their own research and actively participate in conferences and other academic activities locally and overseas.
The Doctor of Education programme is aimed at experienced educators and professionals in education settings who aspire to extend their expertise in one of the specialised areas on offer. The programme also offers a Chinese stream (CMI) for those who would like to enrol to a doctorate degree programme delivered in Chinese.

Tuition fees and cost of living
Tuition fees for MPhil and PhD students are around US$5,400 a year, while taught master’s degrees will set you back US$16,150-64,100 for the whole programme. Tuition fee for Doctor of Education is around US$49,400 for the 72-cp programme. Student accommodation costs between US$2,150-$3,270 per academic year for research students. Explore fees here.
Postgraduate scholarships for international students
All full-time research students admitted to an MPhil or a PhD are eligible for EdUHK’s Research Postgraduate Studentships, which are awarded on the basis of academic merit. It is non-taxable and its value varies from year to year. In the 2023/24 academic year, for example, the monthly stipend is about US$2,300 for all MPhil and PhD students and roughly US$2,370 for post-candidacy PhD students.

Scholarships for international students
The University has established scholarships to encourage and recognise the pursuit of academic excellence of our non-local students. The scholarships are set up with donations and are granted on the basis of academic merit, personal qualities, extra-curricular activities and community service, among other factors. In addition, the HKSAR Government provides scholarships to undergraduate and research postgraduate students from Belt and Road regions.
EdUHK scholarships
o Full Scholarship: covers full tuition fees, on-campus accommodation fees, academic expenses and living allowance
o Tuition Scholarship: provides full tuition fees
o Half Tuition Scholarship: covers half of the tuition fees
HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund
In addition, all full-time MPhil and PhD students at EdUHK are eligible for Research Postgraduate Studentships, which cover a monthly stipend.
New full-time PhD candidates can apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, which is run by Hong Kong’s Research Grants Council. It includes an annual stipend of approximately US$42,460 as well as an annual conference and travel allowance of approximately US$1,760 for up to three years.

EdUHK is a young and thriving research-active university, and has three university and 10 faculty-level centres for research. The academics and researchers have been undertaking 179 ongoing projects with around HK$148 million (in 2022/23) in funding provided by the Research Grants Council and other funding bodies, which bears testament to its research capacity as a young and thriving university.

Student life
Student halls are a vital element of student life at EdUHK. There are currently four on-campus student accommodation halls, namely Northcote Hall, Grantham Hall, Robert Black Hall and the Jockey Club Student Quarters, which offer approximately 2,200 residential places.
Allocation is subject to availability and the eligibility of applicants.
Support services are also available to all students throughout the course of their studies, including a buddy support scheme, regular group trips and activities, on-campus events and a personal mentoring service to help students feel at home.
According to the Graduate Employment Survey’s findings over the past decade, EdUHK graduates have been highly competitive in the field of education, as shown by the consistently high percentage of graduates who are either employed or intend to continue their studies, coupled with the overall rising trend of their average starting salary levels.
EdUHK attaches great importance to the learning experience of students. They are encouraged to take part in different types of service learning, language immersion and overseas exchange programmes to broaden exposure. EdUHK graduates are well-sought after in the local education sector because of their professional knowledge in their specific fields of study, their whole-person development, and their classroom-management experience.
