We welcome over 30,000 students from more than 150 countries to our four friendly campuses: Streatham and St Luke’s in Exeter, Devon, and Penryn and Truro in Cornwall. Our locations offer environments that are inspiring, safe places where you will soon feel at home. Exeter is a historic cathedral city, and the county of Devon has a fabulous coastline and two national parks. Cornwall has a unique and fascinating ecology with scenic beaches and dramatic clifftop views, coupled with a rich history of artistic and scientific innovation, including pioneering environmental technology.

We’re lucky to have some of the most beautiful, green campuses in the UK, providing plenty of areas to socialise with friends and enjoy green landscapes and outside space. Our Streatham, St Luke’s and Penryn campuses have all received Green Flag Awards for being among the best parks and green spaces in the country. We are passionate about sustainability and we're making big strides to make our campuses even greener, and our target is to be net zero by 2030.

Whichever of our campuses you choose, we’re committed to making your student experience the best it can be. With bars, pubs, clubs, theatres and music venues, at the University of Exeter there is plenty to keep you entertained. You’ll also find world-class sports facilities for beginners and athletes alike. We’re the number one sports university in the south of England and Wales, and we frequently finish top 5 in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings each year.

We offer a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research degrees across 40 subjects, taught by world-leading academics. We were one of the few Russell Group institutions to receive a prestigious triple gold award from the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023), whilst the 2021 Research Excellence Framework review showed that we are doing more research, of better quality, with a bigger impact on the world than ever before. Our world-leading research impact grew more than any other Russell Group university, more than 99% of our research was rated of international quality* and 12 of our subjects were in the Top 10 for world-leading impact.**

We are one of the world’s Top 180 universities according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024. We are also Top 20 in the THE Impact Rankings 2023, which measure universities’ overall impact through their work towards meeting the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These underline how the University of Exeter is a fantastic place for students to come and study from all over the world.

At the University of Exeter, we will challenge and inspire our community of learners from every background to thrive, develop the skills they will need for the future and lead the change the world needs. We will use the power of our education and research to create a sustainable, healthy and socially just future.

Available programs

At the University of Exeter, you will find engaged, inclusive, and safe communities, with plenty of opportunities to make life-long friends from all over the world. We offer degree courses across 40 subject areas and provide great choice, flexibility and opportunities to expand your horizons. Field trips and the chance to study or work abroad are a key feature of many of our degrees.

Work experience and study abroad

Many of our degrees offer ‘year abroad’ options which can help you develop a range of valuable skills. These give you either a professional work placement or a year’s study at one of our prestigious international partner universities. You could pick up a new language, learn about different cultures and make lasting friendships. Many destinations are in English-speaking countries or universities, so you don’t necessarily need to know another language. Usually taken during your third year of study, this additional year will provide you with valuable skills attractive to global employers. Many work placements are also available in the UK if you want to stay closer to home but still gain valuable work experience.

Field trips

Field work is an essential part of many of our degrees, and an exciting optional extra for many others. We offer a range of field trip opportunities and our students can be found doing fascinating things in all sorts of locations. You can find full details of field trip modules on the programme pages on our website.

Summer schools

You can also take advantage of study opportunities during the summer vacation. Taught by our world-class academics and external experts, our summer schools offer the chance to learn new skills and acquire knowledge while interacting with people from all over the world.

Build your own degree

We have several ways that you can shape your degree, from multidisciplinary courses like Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences, to the opportunity to study modules from outside your main subject.

Flexible Combined Honours (FCH)

Flexible Combined Honours lets you combine any two or even three subjects from across the entire university, as long as they can be timetabled together and you meet any entry criteria. You can choose how you split your credits between each subject and build your own bespoke degree. What you choose to study determines the exact wording on your degree certificate when you graduate.

Proficiency in Law

Students studying on the Penryn Campus can add a specified number of law modules to their programme to obtain their degree ‘with proficiency in law’ (e.g. ‘Environmental Science with Proficiency in Law’).

Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences

Our two flagship multidisciplinary courses let you study complementary subjects. In Liberal Arts you choose a major from the humanities or social sciences, and core Liberal Arts modules introduce real-world issues and skills that cut across disciplines. Natural Sciences gives you a foundation across the sciences before allowing you to specialise.

Free-choice modules

The majority of our courses usually allow you to study up to 30 credits outside of your subject each year – out of 120 total – assuming timetabling works and you meet any necessary criteria. You could add a Marketing module to your English degree, drop some Philosophy into Computer Science or study a new language – it’s completely up to you.

Language Centre

The Language Centre offers daytime credit-bearing language modules that you can integrate into your degree and evening language courses you can study alongside your degree. Some of these courses offer an accreditation, allowing you to gain an additional qualification on top of your degree.

Our campuses
With beautiful green campuses in Devon and Cornwall, we’re a university of the whole South West. Our campuses offer a mix of historic buildings and modern facilities, but there’s plenty more to explore on the doorstep – including beautiful beaches, spectacular countryside, and exciting culture, food and arts.

Streatham Campus, Exeter

One of the most beautiful campuses in the country, our Streatham Campus on the edge of Exeter in Devon offers an unrivalled study environment, with parkland and gardens to enjoy throughout the year. The centrepiece of Streatham Campus is the stunning Forum which is home to a modern 24/7 library, technology-rich learning spaces, a 400-seat lecture theatre and a variety of retail and catering outlets.

Penryn Campus, Cornwall

Our innovative Penryn Campus in Cornwall has stunning buildings set in a beautiful location close to the waterside town of Falmouth. Shared with Falmouth University, it is a unique place to study. The Penryn Campus is constantly developing, most recently the £12 million extension to the existing Science and Engineering Research Support Facility (SERSF), which builds upon the £30 million investment in the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI). Cumulatively, these facilities put not only the University, but also Cornwall as a whole, at the forefront of research aiming to solve problems associated with environmental change. Other recent additions include the Renewable Energy Engineering Facility (REEF), a £1.2 million Masters Suite and a £4 million sports centre and nursery.

St Luke’s Campus, Exeter

St Luke’s Campus, in the heart of Exeter, has been home to teaching in education since 1855. Now education, sport and medical students enjoy its vibrant collegiate atmosphere and historic setting. Exeter’s St Luke’s Campus is home to a range of academic facilities including a library, IT facilities, modern seminar rooms and lecture theatres. Sports facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, sports hall and an air-conditioned health and fitness studio. We invested £1.7 million in Cross Keys, a high-quality multipurpose space on campus. This has created a social heart to St Luke’s Campus, including a café and a large space for students to meet, eat and study. A £10.5 million upgrade to the South Cloisters provides additional, cutting-edge teaching and research space along with new dedicated space for the teaching of Medical Imaging.

Truro Campus, Cornwall

Our Truro Campus is situated at the Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) site, and  is the base for University of Exeter Medical School students studying for a proportion of their Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) degree during years 2, 3, 4 and 5.
