FREE TUITION UNIVERSITIES IN GERMANY: COST OF LIVING, VISA APPLICATION AND ADMISSION DEADLINE

GERMAN EDUCATION IS AS GOOD AS THEIR FOOTBALL– CONGRATULATIONS GERMANY ON A WELL DESERVED WORLD CUP GLORY!
Study Abroad 365 has put together a list of 25 universities in Germany that are tuition free for international students seeking to study in Germany. However, be informed that while studying in Germany, you’ll be required to finance your feeding and accommodation expenses. International students should budget roughly 500 Euros for their books, healthcare, food and registration. So in one year, an international student should expect to spend 7000 Euros on feeding, accommodation and books expenses.
HOW TO OBTAIN A VISA
To obtain a German visa, you’ll have to show concrete finance proof of your ability to finance your accommodation and feeding expenses during your time of study. This can be done in either of two ways:
(1) Submit a letter of finances to the German consulate or embassy. You can obtain this sponsor letter from your parents or a German relative who is willing to sponsor your studies in Germany.
(2) Open a German blocked account and deposit roughly 7000 euro. This can only happen once you’ve received your letter of admission. This blocked account is opened in the German embassy.
For more information, visit a German consulate in your home country or check out their websites for further details.

Studying abroad

Hi Bushra. Yes, that's true. Some regions were charging (low) tuition fees until recently, but these have now been phased out again. For more information about studying abroad in Germany, check out our country guide: https://www.topuniversities.com/where-to-study/europe/germany/guide

We also have an international student blogging about his experiences in Germany, which may be of interest to you: https://www.topuniversities.com/blog/profile/1386721

Hi Param. Most bachelor's degrees in Germany are taught in German; teaching in English is mostly at master's level. You can find out more with our guide to studying abroad in Germany, here.

Hello
I wanna ask about something. You talked about a blocked account with 7000 euros. You mean 7000 euros for each educational year or only paid once at the beginning.

Hi Suchandra. As in other countries, you'll find German universities provide a mixture of both MA and MSc programs. I'd recommend doing some research into the programs on offer at German institutions you're interested in - and do check the actual course content; the labels "MA" and "MSc" are not always used in the same way. To get started, you could check out our updated guide to the top German universities in each region (lander), here.

Hello Laura

I hope ur doing great. I was just asking about the 7000 euro for the blocked account is it paid once or 7000 euro for each year like if I am studying masters for 2 years should I pay at first 14,000 euro? Thank you and good luck

Hi Ahmed. That figure of 7000 euros per year was given as an estimate of annual living expenses, by the user who started this forum thread. If you were planning to study for two years, then yes you would need to budget twice the amount. You may also want to look at our article on the costs of studying in Germany, here.

Hi Moiz. That's correct; all public universities in Germany are free at undergraduate level and for some postgraduate programs. However, I'm afraid this doesn't apply to MBA programs. For more details about MBAs, you can visit our sister site, TopMBA.com.

Hi Smeet. I'm afraid that as you've found, most undergraduate-level courses in Germany are taught in German. It's much more common to find courses taught in English at master's level, so perhaps you could consider Germany if you decide to continue your studies. To explore other study destinations, you can visit our country guides, here. Best of luck!

Hey Laura
I was wondering if there are any film programs that are tuition free for Americans or is it only other fields? Also, how expensive would you say it would be to be able to afford a place to stay while studying? I know thats a broad question. Sorry, one last question, wouldn't getting a job to support yourself while studying be incredibly hard to get because of not being able to speak German only English

Hi Miguel. The lack of tuition fees applies to all publicly funded programs; you can find out more here. I'm afraid it would probably be challenging to find a job without speaking German; but this is only my perspective. For more on the costs, we have an article here. One of our bloggers, Felix, is from the US and currently studying in Germany. He's written about the costs of living in Frankfurt here and also offers some more insights into accommodation and general student life in Germany here.

Hi Addison,

There are a growing number of English-language programs offered by universities in Germany and English-language master's programs are even more common. All the information can be found on each institution's own website (under 'International students/programs') but here are two links that might be helpful to start you off:

Universität Hamburg - English-language master's programs only

Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg - English-language bachelor's and master's programs

Hope this helps! Laura
