Our interdisciplinary Biotechnology programme  focuses on the application of engineering and technology to biological problems.

Biotechnology is a fast growing, dynamic sector of the bio-economy and this programme has been designed to further develop your scientific and engineering knowledge to meet the demand for highly skilled scientists within the biotechnology industry. Upon completion of the programme you will be able to apply your knowledge and skills to biological engineering problems.

As a biotechnology-focused engineer, you will help to improve the world around us by tackling global issues in bioprocessing, healthcare and medicine. For example, in developing processes to make sustainable products such as biofuels or foods from biological resources, the manufacturing of vaccines and antibiotics, or the creation of medical and environmental technology solutions to help people achieve a better quality of life. This may also include developing new medicines using DNA technology or improving methods of drug delivery in order to improve healthcare for the population.

This programme includes a high proportion of practical work which provides valuable experience for your career. You will also gain knowledge and understanding of modern biotechnology principles, with practical insights into current manufacturing and biomedical applications.

You will be immersed in our research-intensive culture and will complete your own biotechnology-focused research project. This will take up around a third of your course, working alongside our internationally respected research teams, and helping you to gain solid practical and theoretical skills to boost your chosen career trajectory.
