Created with industry partners, including Ford Motor Company and Jaguar Land Rover, our Automotive Engineering MSc will provide you with the knowledge and technical expertise for a career in the fast-paced automotive sector of today. You will specialise in subjects that are directly relevant to a rapidly changing industry and the future of ground transportation to provide you with solid expertise for your future career or research.
Our course equips graduates with excellent skills that are highly sought after by a range of employers, including major automotive sector companies, automotive suppliers (manufacturing and technical services), motorsport, mechanical engineering, financial institutions, aerospace, the energy sector etc. As an engineer with a Master’s degree, the technical, analytical, problem solving, and communication skills developed can be applied to a variety of jobs, both within and outside the automotive engineering sector.
The programme will build on your existing engineering skills and enhance your understanding of the latest automotive technologies, including the development of the next generation of vehicles that feature new hardware, software, autonomy and electrification. You will look in depth at modern trends and methods in automotive engineering and will be given the appropriate analysis techniques to model and design contemporary vehicles. You will also learn how to plan, execute and evaluate projects related to automotive systems and be able to interpret and analyse relevant data. Additionally, programme content will use mathematics and science skills to solve complex automotive engineering problems, as well as focusing on the societal, environmental and regulatory issues related to this ever-developing sector.
Practical activities are integral to our course, for example, by spending a week at HORIBA MIRA proving ground you will learn how to collect and analyse vehicle handling, off-road dynamics, noise measurement, braking performance and wet weather driving data.
The department has a strong and growing research programme with world-class activities and facilities. We have four major research groups working across the technologies of automotive and aeronautical engineering which feed directly into our postgraduate teaching. Research topics range from the development of new design methodologies for hybrid powertrains to aerodynamic experiments.
