European and International Languages and Literatures

Graduates in European and International Languages and Literatures will have acquired advanced competences in the history of European and International literary civilization in its diverse dimensions (aesthetic, cultural and historical). They will have excellent skills in two foreign languages and cultures and be able to competently use the methodological tools necessary for scientific research in the literary and philological-linguistic fields.
In addition to the educational objectives established by law for the  Magister Degree Class 37, graduates will also be able to:

• communicate in their language of study at a C1/C2 level (European Framework of Reference), depending on their language options;
• actively participate, in a foreign language, in a critical-literary, debate, drawing the necessary links with the cultural context and showing autonomy of analysis and judgement;
• plan and organize communicative networks in companies, boards, institutions which work in the specific fields of language, literature and culture;
• mediate  between  diverse linguistic and cultural systems and harmonize interpersonal and intercultural dynamics originating in situations of ethnic, cultural and linguistic “difference”, through activities which underline  the ability to share ideas, projects and actions;
• create and carry out innovative work plans, participating in the preparation and articulation of communication systems in the field of foreign literatures and cultures with a versatile and interdisciplinary approach;
• develop an autonomous and critical work method even in new contexts and autonomously update their disciplinary competences.

The cultural and linguistic instruction of the four major multi-centric languages and literatures (English, French, German and Spanish) has expanded to include cognate languages and literatures as Australian, Canadian, Indian, South-African, Caribbean, Francophone (Quebecoise, African, Maghrebi, of the Indian Ocean), Hispano-American and Austrian. As a result, the University has diverse institutions and centres for international research: The International Centre on Plurilinguism, The Centre for Canadian Culture,  The International Centre for Latin-American Studies, and The International Centre for Migrant Literatures. It has also activated a number of international and intercontinental university agreements for the mobility of staff and students within a high quality network of  education. In this way examinations held abroad will be credited and recognized as equivalent to examinations given in the home university.
In addition to an adequate number of credits for the two languages studied, the literatures and the cognate literatures, the graduate can personalize his/her study plan by choosing elective courses among groupings of courses, so as to gain in-depth knowledge on either the critical-literary and artistic dimension or the linguistic-philological.
All Language courses and Literature courses present in the study plan are propedeutical. Therefore, students cannot, for instance, take their Language LM II year exam before passing Language LM I. The same applies to Literature courses.  Language courses are not propedeutical to Literatures courses and vice versa.
