The objective of the doctorate in music is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the discipline, while integrating you into contemporary scientific and musicological debates.   • Research-creation (interpretation, improvisation, composition) as well as any interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of these disciplines and other related disciplines (visual arts, cinema, literature, political sciences, sociology, psychology, computer science, movement sciences, etc. .)
Different musical repertoires are covered (learned and popular Western music, world music, film and video game music). The analysis of these artistic objects, their creation and transmission processes as well as the entire ecosystem that supports them are all possible areas of research in this program.

General eligibility conditions

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XXVI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Required diplomas and admission thresholds: Quebec

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.3 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Conditions specific to this program

To be eligible as a regular student in the Doctorate in Music program, the candidate must:

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XXVI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • hold a 2nd cycle diploma in music (ethnomusicology or musicology), or a 2nd cycle diploma adequately preparing for the studies they wish to undertake, or attest to training deemed equivalent
  • have obtained an average of at least 3.3 out of 4.3 or the equivalent in the 2nd cycle
