The International Master in Composition for Screen, also called International Master in Composition for Screen (InMICS), offers the opportunity to improve your composition for the screen, develop your style through a project and launch your career through internship and close links with key industry players. The program allows a double specialization (one per year and per establishment) in 2 partner establishments depending on your choice of course. Activities include seminars in which professionals from the field take part (composers, directors, producers, musical supervisors, etc.), collective and collaborative workshops integrated into partner festivals, analysis and dissemination of the artistic approach as well as a internship.

Developed over 3 years by the strategic partnership ICSS ( International Creative Soundtrack Studies ) with the support of the Erasmus+ program, this unique course in composition for the screen brings together the expertise of 4 higher education establishments: CNSMD of Lyon (France), Conservatorio di Musica GB Martini Bologna (Italy), KASK & Conservatorium/School of Arts Ghent (Belgium) and the Faculty of Music of the University of Montreal. It also brings together 4 professional partners whose main activity is related to cinema and audiovisual and with a particular interest in musical creation: Aubagne International Film Festival (France), Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna (Italy), FilmFest Gent (Belgium) and Permission Inc. (Canada).

The approaches of these 2 types of structures are complementary, the professional partners bringing a professionalizing perspective taking into account the practical realities of the profession. The program has the particularity of focusing its training on the cooperative work of composers and sound creators with directors and visual artists, and of providing students with an international network of excellence, thus striving to bring higher education closer together. of the professional world.

General eligibility conditions

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Required diplomas and admission thresholds: Quebec

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.0 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Accepted diploma: Baccalaureate, Bachelor; duration of 3 years, or other undergraduate degree deemed equivalent.

Conditions specific to this program

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies;
  • hold a 1st cycle diploma in instrumental composition, mixed composition, electroacoustic composition or writing, or hold a 3rd cycle diploma from the Conservatory in composition or attest to any other training deemed equivalent by the dean;
  • have obtained, in their previous studies, an average of at least 3.3 out of 4.3 or the equivalent;
  • have completed or taken as a complementary course any undergraduate course deemed relevant to support the research and creation project;
  • submit to a test which will consist of composing music for a required animated short film and appear for an interview (in person or by videoconference) to explain your project and your motivations. A non-refundable fee of 87 euros will be required.
  • Students must have a good knowledge of English and French; knowledge of French is verified by the obligatory passing of the International French Test (TFI) for all students who have obtained an undergraduate degree or its equivalent in a non-French-speaking institution. The TFI is not eliminatory, but the result of the test will guide the nature of admission with the possible imposition of French courses which will promote the success of the program.
